A collaboration between Beni Rugs and Flamingo Estate was always destined to happen.

Long-time admirers of each other’s work, it was Richard Christiansen’s interior designers who first planted the seed when they reimagined Flamingo Estate, his spectacular hilltop home in Los Angeles, whose lush garden has spawned a lifestyle brand specializing in delectable soaps, candles, oils, and honey.

In the end, it was Beni Rugs founder Robert Wright who picked up the phone first: “It’s super interesting for us to take the point of view of a brand like Flamingo Estate and apply it to a rug, which in essence is a blank canvas,” he explains.

A dozen captivating designs sprang from the one-time hedonistic enclave and its hidden architectural details. The spirit of the garden’s imposing brick stairway is captured in the Orchard Staircase rug, while Garden Fountain is an almost literal translation of tile motifs in a secret water feature on the property. “Sometimes the easiest answer is right in front of you,” says Robert, whose personal favorite is Flower Floor, a twist on a classic check pattern inspired by the estate’s flower room.

Taking a heritage craft and putting it in conversation with a contemporary perspective is what drives Robert creatively. He was beguiled by Moroccan rugs on his first-ever visit to Marrakech, and it spurred him to launch Beni Rugs in 2018. Previous collaborations with top-class creatives include the brand’s artistic director, Colin King, and Athena Calderone.

And then there’s the manufacture: each Beni rug is made to order in a vertically integrated studio just outside Marrakech, with up to 10 specialist artisans involved in the process. “In a world where almost everything is mass-produced, something made for you from a pair of hands sustainably and responsibly is a marker of true luxury,” muses Robert.
