This Sean Anderson Designed Space Is a Master Class in the Open Floor Plan
As told to The Expert TeamPhotographed by Haris Kenjar
Love the idea of an open plan but struggling with how to execute it in a way that feels intimate and cohesive? Expert Sean Anderson can help. In the Memphis-based designer’s epic Vestavia Hills project, he approached the layout of the lofty space with a masterful hand, balancing modern and rustic elements and resulting in a streamlined design that is comfortable and cozy. Effortlessly transitioning from gathering space to dining room to kitchen, the final product is as inviting as it is functional – no doors necessary.

What do you think anchors this space?
The physical and visual weight of the black coffee table creates a focal point around which the space gathers. However, its low profile allows the eye to continue to travel through the room without being a distraction.
What is this room used for? What inspired your design?
Not only is the space the primary gathering area for the home but it serves as the primary thoroughfare connecting the bedroom wing of the house to the rest of the living quarters. It was crucial to maintain a flow through the space while creating several “areas” for seating and informal dining. The architecture itself - the oversized windows, the scale of the rooms - was large and lofty, so it was only right for the interiors to support that.
Why do you think this space works so well? What’s the vibe of this space?
It works because it’s functional. There’s not a space here that isn’t welcoming and ready to be used by friends and family. It’s grand, but not unapproachable or intimidating.
